Chester Community Energy Ltd. is a registered cooperative (a Community Benefit Society) which aims to develop and facilitate renewable energy schemes in Chester and the surrounding area. We want to promote renewable energy, reduce the City’s carbon footprint and encourage energy efficiency. We continually seek to raise funds to carry out our work via grants, crowd funding and public share offers. We successfully secured a grant from DECC’s Urban Community Fund to help us explore the feasibility of our first scheme. We are not-for-profit and all of our Directors are volunteers. Any surplus funds we generate in the future by owning and operating renewable energy installations, will be re-invested back into community and environmental projects.  We are registered as a Community Benefit Society (no. 7272) with the Financial Conduct Authority under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014.
With our members’ help, we successfully raised £62k in community shares and installed a 50kW solar PV system at Chester’ Northgate Arena leisure centre. This community owned renewable energy scheme is generating a community fund for further investment in new projects and interest to return to our members on their shares. In 2018, our community fund supported Frodsham Community Centre, Neston Community Centre and Retreat House, Chester for LED installation; and Cheshire Waste Reduction Volunteers to purchase large compost bins.
